Scary Times at Miri Mieri!

A few weeks ago we thought that a football had been kicked in to the Miri Mieri garden, but on closer inspection we were delighted to discover that it was a large yellow pumpkin!

With Halloween approaching we decided it would be a good time to harvest it so we held a pumpkin carving session on Saturday 29th October. Four families braved the damp weather to help lift the pumpkin, and braved the slime to scrape out the pulp and seeds. A not too scary face was carved by an adult helper but the poor pumpkin lost a tooth in the excitement!

All the children took some seeds home to be dried for a week or so then stored in an old envelope for planting in the spring. It was hard to believe that such a small seed could produce such a big fat pumpkin! The rest of the seeds were taken home to be roasted with a little salt for about 10 mins and the pumpkin flesh was roasted together with potatoes, shallots, carrots, celery, mushrooms and garlic drizzled with olive oil! Delicious!
